The Benefits of Teletherapy
What is Teletherapy?
Teletherapy, also known as virtual therapy or online therapy, allows clients to meet with a therapist remotely. Therapists use their computers to meet with their clients via video conferencing or even by phone. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, or HIPAA, mandates the delivery of all teletherapy services through a secure online platform.
How Does Teletherapy Work?
Teletherapy sessions work much the same way as traditional therapy sessions with only one significant difference – the therapist and client are not in the same room.
Sessions are scheduled and both parties log-in via a secure video platform. My practice utilizes Doxy.me for teletherapy sessions which is fully HIPPA compliant.
During the session, we see and hear each other in real-time using webcam and audio. Through this virtual environment, I utilize the same traditional techniques and activities employed in a face-to-face therapy session. (Not comfortable with a computer? I offer telephone sessions as well!)
Is Teletherapy right for me?
Teletherapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy without compromising quality treatment and care. These sessions have been helpful for people in varying life situations. Such as people who are
- new and beginning counseling,
- living in remote areas or have other travel limitations
- under time constraints and have busy schedules
- more comfortable in private surroundings
- health conscious and uncomfortable exposing themselves to potential infections
Teletherapy can be especially valuable in providing access to care for people living with illness, those suffering from chronic health conditions such as cancer or who are in recovery. It has also been beneficial for individuals undergoing treatments and have difficulty travelling to the office. A telehealth session allows easy access to care and support from the privacy and comfort of their home.
Another great benefit of Teletherapy is the flexibility of scheduling appointment times outside of traditional office hours. When a therapist can be available at a time that suits the client, maybe early morning or later in the evening, it makes it easier to seek support when its needed most.
Teletherapy is effective in treating depression, anxiety, stress, grief, adjustment issues, and many other common problems. When supportive therapy is readily accessible, whether through video conference or phone, the path to healing begins.
Along with the convenience and flexibility of Teletherapy, I design a personalized therapeutic plan that helps center and guide you on your path to wellness. Convenience and flexibility towards well-being is just a click away.
